The Fairness Doctrine rule required broadcasters to “afford reasonable opportunity for discussion of contrasting points of view on controversial matters of public importance.” In 1987, the FCC rescinded the Fairness Doctrine, finding it to be contrary to the Constitution as well as bad policy.
