API is pleased to release our latest study, Alabama Public Pensions: Building a Stable Financial Foundation for the Years Ahead. Authored by James Barth and John Jahera of Auburn University, the study makes a compelling case for structural pension reform as our state is set to spend nearly $1 billion on public pension costs this year alone.

The paper provides three recommendations for structural reform to our state’s pension system that identify cost-saving measures overlooked during previous reform efforts, fund the current pension balance, and protect for the future by making pension costs more predictable and adequately funded.

At a time when budget shortfalls are in the forefront of every policymaker’s mind, pension reform should not be discounted as it remains the single biggest reward for states attempting to solve budget woes brought on by the recession and extended economic recovery that followed.
