API and IssuesGovernment Reform API has been a leader in promoting policies that save taxpayers money and demand government efficiency. For example, we support performance-based budgeting that requires greater accountability to Alabama’s taxpayer thereby helping to reduce the waste of tax dollars. In addition, we authored the Taxpayer’s Advocate Law that helps new businesses cut through state bureaucracy red tape.
Education We’ve authored fair solutions advocating greater choice and responsible spending in education. We drafted a model bill for parental choice in education. API is a founding partner of the National Education Choice Roundtable. We advocate privatization of non-educational services as a means to conserve educational resources.
Gambling The newly updated, comprehensive study titled Theft By Consent confirms the devastating economic and social impact of state-sponsored lotteries. API also a nationally recognized resource on other gambling venues such as casinos and video poker.
Social Policy On the legislative front, API has been at the forefront of social policy such as strengthening the laws against abuse of the elderly and children, promoting legislation which values life, and advocating policy that protects marriage.
Tort Reform We launched a national effort to oppose state-sponsored lawsuits against private business highlighting the fact that taxation and regulation through litigation is not the proper role of the judiciary. At the state level, we were a pro business partner in the substantial civil justice reform legislation passed in 1999.
Welfare Reform In 1992 we drafted model legislation for the first welfare reform package (workfare) introduced in Alabama. API’s president and director of research served on the governor’s Welfare Reform Task Force.
Environment In 1996 we helped change environmental education in America with our commercially successful publication, Facts Not Fear: Teaching our Children about the Environment. The book, which has been translated into two other languages, was born out of the need for a user-friendly resource to help parents give their kids a common-sense approach to understanding and appreciating our environment. The work has been praised as a valuable and important tool that helps put media hype and hysteria into a more honest and responsible perspective.
